Dear Parents, Guardians and Friends
The Year 11 students have almost finished their PPEs (pre-public exams) and will be soon be back in lessons as normal. They have worked really hard for these exams and we are very proud of their attitude. Thank you parents, if you have a daughter in Year 11 for your support at home too. I would also like to thank the rest of the school for being so considerate of the “no entry” areas and walking around the long way to their destinations to avoid creating unnecessary noise during the exams period.
Last Thursday was our Year 9 options’ evening and it was lovely to see so many of you here. The hall was absolutely packed and so too were the department areas afterwards. This is an exciting time for Year 9 as they consider their options for GCSE. It was very helpful to have a good number of Year 10 students available that night too. Our students are our best advocates and genuinely “tell it like it is”. I hope the Year 9s found it helpful; they certainly asked many good questions.
I think the departments had an enjoyable evening as well, especially the history department, who never really need an excuse to dress up! Thanks Mr Furlong and Ms Herron
The next stage of the process is the “taster day” next Friday, for which students have just chosen some subjects to trial.
In other news, for the last week our Year 12 French A level students have been in Fougères, France taking part in a French exchange alongside other schools in Wokingham, and led by Reading Boys. Exchanges are a true test of character as students stay with a host family rather than with their friends; really making them have to speak French and immerse themselves into the culture. I am happy to report that our students rose to the challenge and had a great time. They attended lessons and even volunteered in a primary school.
I am sure our students will have made friends for life. Thanks Mrs Davis for organising this and thanks to Mrs Bradley for accompanying the students on their trip.
PE also had a great week! Last Saturday Miss Godfrey and Mrs Woods accompanied a group of students to the Berkshire Schools Cross Country Championships at Newbury where we did rather well!
There were 12 Holt girls running in each of the Year 7 and Year 8/9 age groups, which made up three complete teams.
As a result of Saturday, the following students have all qualified to represent Berkshire in the Inter-Counties Championship in February:
- U19 Girls – Sophie Poole (15th)
- U19 Boys – Tom Nike (8th)
- U17 Girls – Lara Croft (7th)
- U15 Girls – Abigail Baines (4th)
