It has been another action packed week with so many different events and activities going on, so many in fact, that rather than this being the final blog of the year it will be another penultimate!
Last Wednesday we enjoyed Sports Personality of the Year 2017. It was the 4th “SPOTY” that we have held and it was every bit as wonderful as the other three. The PE department led by Miss Godfrey, whilst Mrs Bolton is on maternity leave, showcased all that is brilliant about sport in general and Holt School sport in particular. The theme, which links in with the whole school focus on character, was “sport does not build character it reveals it” throughout the evening the importance of character traits including effort, courage and fair play were promoted. The number of sports in which our students participate in is so impressive and stretches from the purely recreational to the highest level of international competition. The audience of nearly 400 had a fabulous evening.
The very next evening we had the pleasure of an art and technology exhibition. There were some stunning pieces of work on display. Including Ama Dogbe’s work shown above which was selected for the Royal Academy online exhibition of A Level work. As well as hosting the exhibition the Art department also have run the ever popular inter house Art competition in which each house had to create a figure or in Lacemakers case the world using only recycled objects. The results are stunning and are now displayed at the back of the main hall. The theme was inspired by our third Global Learning event which is taking place today. Do ask your sons and daughters what they have learnt today and, more importantly, what are they going to do differently in the future in order to protect the planet.
Watching the science lecture on plastics in the main hall and then listening to groups discussing the issues raised has been really good and it was pleasing to hear the students saying what action they would now take to help preserve the precious resources we have. This afternoon everyone is out and about looking after our environment – sadly not all our students appreciate just what a wonderful site and buildings we have so we are having a community tidy up to put into practise what they have been learning about.
In addition to all the events listed above there has also been the most fantastic Year 8 interhouse Science competition – I spent a very happy hour testing out each house’s “Great Rollercoaster marble challenge”. There has also been the traditional end of term presentation assemblies with lots of speeches, performances, certificates and hand shakes, I have enjoyed every one.
I think we will all be ready for a break when Friday comes………..
