Dear Parents, Guardians and Friends,

Year 10 started off with a trip this week to Hurst Castle spit, one half of the year went out on Tuesday with the other half visiting today.

Mrs Craig told us about Tuesday’s trip:

The annual Hurst Castle spit Year 10 trip went ahead this week. We were fortunate to have fine weather yet again!

Upon arrival we walked to the spit and the groups was split into two. The first group listened to a talk from Mr Marrison about the development and management of Hurst Castle spit whilst the other group completed their measurements. The hypothesis is The pebbles get larger towards to back of the beach. The students worked really hard to collect their measurements at each break of slope across a transect of the beach. The groups then swapped over.

Once all data collection was completed, we sat on the beach for lunch and drove to our final destination at Highcliffe to draw a field sketch of beach management and the different approaches from Dorset and Hampshire councils.

After a quick ice cream stop we made our way back to school. Thank you to all involved for a fabulous day. The students were absolutely fantastic!

Thank you to the geography department for organising the trip and it was great to have such glorious weather. Later this week they will be writing up their findings ready for their GCSE coursework.

The summer music concert also took place this week with a range of items from our ‘Showstoppers’ group with a medley of musical theatre items. We also heard some pieces from our orchestra, Holt singers as well as solos and duets. There were students represented from across the school from Year 7 to sixth form and they did a fantastic job. The songs from ‘Wicked’ almost had me singing along… Thank you to Mr Gray and Mrs Crozier for organising the event, it is great to see such talent from our students.

The summer term is a great time of year with so many events and competition taking place, for example interhouse tennis and interhouse dance starting next week. Mrs Crozier recently gave a memorable message in her first Spinners house assembly about the importance of participation. Mrs Crozier had calculated how many points the house could have achieved just by taking part, not by winning but just by having a go. This is a valuable message to us all about how beneficial it is to push yourself outside what you normally would do. So, to every student thinking about trying a new club, or just taking part in something they have not done before this summer term the most important thing to do, is to just try. You never know where it could lead.

And finally, congratulations to our GCSE and A-level students who finished their public exams this week. They have conducted themselves impeccably during this time and now it is time to relax and enjoy a wonderful summer break- they absolutely deserve it. Next weeks edition of the blog will certainly feature our Year 13 leavers party and Year 11 prom.
